Okeeheelee Nature Center
On the north side of the park, the Okeeheelee Nature Center protects a pocket of pine flatwoods and wetlands that gives visitors a look at what this part of Palm Beach County looked like before it was mined, farmed, or paved. A network of trails, a small exhibit hall with live animals, and a calendar of ranger-led programs make it the quietest, most kid-friendly corner of Okeeheelee.

Pine flatwoods and wetlands, on foot
The nature center's trail system winds through pine flatwoods, a fire-adapted habitat that was once common across South Florida before development shrank it to scattered preserves like this one, and connects to boardwalk sections over wetter ground. It's an easy, flat walk suitable for most fitness levels and for families with young kids, with interpretive signage along the way explaining the plant communities and the wildlife that depends on them — wading birds, gopher tortoises, and the occasional snake or alligator in the wetter sections.
An exhibit hall with live animals
Inside, the nature center keeps a small collection of live native animals — the kind of hands-off exhibit that lets visitors see a gopher tortoise, snakes, or turtles up close without disturbing anything in the wild outside. It's a modest space compared to the county's larger environmental centers, but it does the job of giving context to what visitors are about to walk through on the trails, and it's usually the first stop for school groups and family visits.
Ranger programs and what to expect
Palm Beach County park rangers run a rotating schedule of guided walks, talks, and family programs out of the nature center, which is the best way to actually learn the habitat rather than just walking past it. Programs and hours can change seasonally, so it's worth checking the county's own listing before a visit if a specific program is the draw. Bring insect repellent and water regardless of the season — South Florida flatwoods trails don't offer much shade, and mosquitoes are a near-constant companion outside of the driest winter months.
